Lot Essay
From 1852, Taplow Court, Buckinghamshire was the home of William Grenfell, 1st Baron Desborough and his wife Ettie. They hosted an aristocratic and elite group known as 'the Souls' at the house. Visitors included Vita Sackville-West, Edith Wharton and Oscar Wilde.
There was a small Augustine priory at Sandleford circa 1200. By 1440 the property was in a ruinous state. James Wyatt rebuilt the remains as a Gothic style country house in 1780 for Elizabeth Montague (1720-1800).
Sir Augustus William James Clifford, first baronet (1788-–1877, ,naval admiral and court official lived at Westfield House, Ryde.
The Siege of Sebastopol (1854-1855) carried out by the British, French, Sardinian and Turkish troops during the Crimean War lasted for 11 months. William David Murray, Viscount Stormont (d.1893) served in the Crimea (see also lot 620).
