THREE GEORGE II SILVER SUGAR VASES
ONE COVER WITH THE MARK OF FREDERICK KANDLER, OTHER MARKS WORN, LONDON, CIRCA 1750
Each vase shaped with part-fluted lower bodies, the shoulder applied with four scroll handles connected by shells, on a gadrooned foot, the pierced covers with baluster finials, one engraved with a crest below a Viscount's coronet, the two smaller vases marked on the base, the cover of the larger vase and one smaller vase marked on the bezel
9 in. (23 cm.) high and smaller
46 oz. (1,440 gr.)
The crest is that of Murray for David, 7th Viscount Stormont, later 2nd Earl of Mansfield (1727-1796). (3)

Lot Essay

The table garniture reflects the mid eighteenth century taste for 'columbarium' urn-decorated apartments promoted by the Rome-trained architect Robert Adam and others. Such condiment sets are discussed by M.Snodin, 'Silver vases and their purpose', Connoisseur, January, 1997.
