This commemorates the ill-fated mission of Charles George Gordon (d.1885), who was sent by the British Government in 1884 to assist the Khedive of Egypt and was killed by the Mahdists during the storming of Khartoum in January the following year. The city was re-established as the capital of the Sudan in September 1898.
