Lot Essay
One of several variations of the 'square' coin-slot models of 1901-1904, this was the first Monarch Junior case and motor but is otherwise similar to the earlier square version, which used the 'Trademark' model in the same way. The plinth, constructed of oak and beech, is typical of mainland European practice, as is the pivoted horn. Most pre tone-arm models sold in Great Britain had a wood travelling arm.
A circular 'Nipper' Deutsche Grammophon transfer (partly rubbed away) is on the rear of the motor casing; the winder is probably not original, but the vertical speed control most probably is.
