Lot Essay

In 1837 Miller moved to New Orleans where he was engaged by Capt William Drummond Stewart to accompany an expedition to the Rocky Mountains. The journey brought Miller into close contact with the American Indians, whose hunting and social customs he depicted in 200 watercolour sketches.
In 1840 he travelled to Scotland to execute a series of paintings based on his western sketches for Capt Stewart's hunting lodge in Perthshire, of which this is suspected to be one.
