Ikkan (1817-1893) was a priest in the Kyosanji (temple) in Nagoya. He always worked in wood and mainly made animals and figures. He was perhaps best known for his seated or recumbent figures of shojo and for small groups of hares and, as here, rats. Ikkan's work is identifiable by its fine detail, compact form, good hairwork and well inlaid eyes.
