INCISED YONGLE SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1403-1424)

Of quatrefoil oval form with foliated sides, carved with two scholars sitting in a pavilion within a bamboo grove beside a lotus pond, in the foreground a young attendant walking toward the pavilion carrying food, all amid ornamental rocks and trees reserved on a diaper-ground, the cavetto with a scroll issuing flowers in different stages of bloom including peonies, chrysanthemum and mallows, the reserve deeply carved with a classic scroll through the thick lacquer, the incised mark in a vertical line to the left side of the brown-lacquered base
