Paris, probably 1768, with the charge mark of Jean-Jacques Prevost 1762-1768 and the discharge mark of Julien Alaterre 1768-1774, maker's mark badly struck, later struck with two French post-1864 import marks for gold
Rectangular turquoise blue lacquer étui-à-tablettes, the cover applied with pierced gold inscription 'SOUVENIR' on the front and 'D'AMITIE' on the back, both sides of the base set with glazed oval gouache on ivory miniatures of a lady in lilac dress with flowers in her high-piled upswept powdered hair and a gentleman in plum-coloured coat on the reverse, both within stamped ribbon-twist gold mounts, the reeded gold mounts chased with chevrons of leaves, inside a gold-capped pencil and gold-riveted three-leaved ivory tablets
