GENEVA, CIRCA 1780/1800, BEARING PRESTIGE MARKS INCLUDING MAKER'S MARK C.F INCUSE, A CROWN ABOVE, HEART BELOW
Oval box, the cover, base and sides engine-turned with horizontal reeding and enamelled in translucent grey simulating chintz painted with moiré flower sprays of red roses, blue pansies, and leaves, within polished gold border, the cover, base and sides edged in band of green-gold acanthus on a sablé ground, the side panels flanked by three-colour gold classical urns

Lot Essay

Another box with identical marks is in the Louvre, illustrated in S. Grandjean, Les tabatières du musée du Louvre, Paris, 1981, no. 590. Snuff-boxes enamelled in the same technique were sold at the same Lange auction, lot 30, at Sotheby's, Zurich, 14 November 1979, lot 258 and in the Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan collection sale, Sotheby's, London, 18 June 1979, lot 58. A matching sealing-wax case with flower decoration was sold Sotheby's, New York, 24 October 1980, lot 918.
