ATTRIBUTED TO THE SAPPHO PAINTER, CIRCA 500 B.C.
With a departure scene, a bearded warrior stepping onto a biga, fully armed with a shield slung over his shoulders, holding the reins, a warrior and a horse to the side, his helmet high on his head, his long hair falling on to his shoulders, holding a spear, a bearded and draped attendant beside the team, facing right and looking back, an African facing them, leading a horse to the left, holding a helmet and a spear, draped in a short chlamys, his hair pulled up in a chignon and bound in a band, all standing on a thin groundline, several nonsense inscriptions in the field; a checker-pattern above, palmettes on the shoulders, tongues at the base of the neck, details in added red
