FIVE ROMAN AND BYZANTINE SILVER SPOONS
CIRCA 1ST-7TH CENTURY A.D.
Including a Roman cochleare, the plain ovoid bowl merging with the tapering shaft, bisected by a molding adorned with lozenges with incised crosshatching and horizontal ridges; a Roman ligula, the piriform bowl with an incised groove below the rim, the shaft tapering to a baluster finial; a Byzantine ligula, the piriform bowl decorated on the underside with incised foliate ornament, with a vertical disk joining the bowl to the long tapering baluster handle; a Byzantine ligula, the piriform bowl with an incised cruciform motif within concentric lozenges framed by a groove below the flattened rim, a volute-like extension joining to the handle, its tip forming the head of a griffin, with splaying acanthus merging from the back, the baluster handle tapering to a point; and a Roman spoon with a fiddle-shaped bowl joined to the tapering handle by means of a disk-shaped volute
