Lot Essay

The present work is a portrait of Mrs Denise Field-Reid, who was a pupil at the Pont-Aven School of Painting in 1938-9. The school was set up by William and Mary Scott and Geoffrey Nelson, William taught still life and figure painting, Geoffrey Nelson taught landscape painting and Mary Scott drawing.

Portrait of Mrs Field-Reid is a very early and unusual painting by Scott. For this reason, it is difficult to date exactly, but it is likely to have been painted after Autumn 1931, when Scott left Ireland to join the Royal Academy schools. Stylistically, it is unlikely to have been painted after 1936.

Sarah Whitfield is currently preparing the Catalogue Raisonné of works in oil by William Scott.
