Two butler's trays of corresponding pattern were supplied to William, 5th Earl of Dumfries for Dumfries House, Ayrshire in 1763 by Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779). They were invoiced as '2 large mahogany Butlers Trays' at a cost of £1 3s (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, vol. I, London, 1978 pp. 135 & 139 and vol. II, p. 276, fig. 504).
