The shells heading this chair's front legs, with their diminishing husks are a feature found on labelled chairs from the Clerkenwell workshop of Giles Grendey (1693-1780). A pair of George II walnut side chairs, attributed to Giles Grendey, displaying the same motif, was offered by Theodore and Ruth Baum, Sotheby's, New York, 22 October 2004, lot 407.
