Elève de Bouguereau, Canet expose au Salon des Artistes Français à Paris entre 1903 et 1935. Comme l'avait fait son illustre prédécesseur Etienne Dinet, Canet décide de s'installer en Algérie, en 1924, dans ce pays qui l'inspire tant.
