Writing to a Methodist in Newfoundland, Wesley rejoices that his 'Health & Strength are just the same now, that they were forty years ago', with the only difference that 'I was then frequently weary: My Body sunk under my Work: Whereas now ... I do not know what Weariness means'. The recent deaths of Arthur Thorney and J. Fletcher are reminders that the Lord 'has no need of man's [help]. The Pillars fall: Yet the Building stands!'. The letter ends with encouragement of the recipient in his missionary work: 'Go on, my Brother! Be your present success more or less, be not weary!'. The letter on the verso by Thomas Coke communicates the news of his intended journey to Nova Scotia, with related instructions.
Dr Thomas Coke (1747-1814) was Wesley's right-hand man and amanuensis in his later years; Wesley appointed him superintendent of the American Methodist community in 1784, and he was closely involved in the establishment of an independent American Methodist church thereafter.
