FIRST OR SECOND EDITION IN GERMAN, and first use of this extensive woodcut cycle. It may be preceded by a Strassburg edition printed at an anonymous press and less richly illustrated, which is variously dated c.1482 or c.1478-80 (CIBN). A Low-German edition was printed at the same press at the same time. The Sorg woodcuts appeared again in 1492, in an edition printed by Schobsser, also at Augsburg. Of the 21 institutional copies recorded in ISTC, 10 are imperfect. The Vitas patrum was a popular collection of the lives of the Desert Fathers, ascribed in the middle ages to St. Jerome.
