Woodcut illustration of a hybrid creature to title and numerous other cuts of animals, including lions, ant-eaters, elephants, giraffes, turtles, camels, rhinoceros after Dürer, and a unicorn, many almost full-page. Woodcut initials. (A little light browning to text and spotting to margins, small repair to title deleting ownership stamp.) Contemporary German blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, arms of the Duke of Stettin and of the Holy Roman Empire, signed S,AE, centrally placed on front and back cover respectively, roll-tooled borders representing the Virgin and Child, King David and other figures, red gauffered edges (rebacked, covers rubbed, chip at corner, lacking clasps). Provenance: front cover of binding with ownership initials 'M.P.C. , P.D.V.P.', back cover dated 1588.

Third edition in German of Gessner's Thierbuch, part of his monumental Historia Animalium, which was 'the most authoritative zoological book between Aristotle and the publication of Ray's Classification of Fauna in 1693' (PMM). The animals are arranged alphabetically, with an accompanying description written by Gesner or based on the contemporary state of knowledge, detailing the name, characteristics, and literary and symbolic associations of each.
