2° (317 x 230mm). Title in red and black with woodcut border, title to New Testament and colophon with woodcut borders, numerous woodcut illustrations. (Some staining and soiling, a few corners or foremargins repaired, several leaves rehinged at beginning and end, some shoulder notes trimmed, one or two tears affecting text.) Contemporary German blind-stamped pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, spine lettered in later manuscript, two clasps (clasps renewed, new front endpaper, rubbed and darkened). Provenance: Jacob Frankfurt (contemporary title inscription, annotations) -- brother Hilary, Carmelite convent of St. Sebastian near ?Achenrain (inscription dated 1699) -- ?Bad Tölz, Franciscan convent (18th-century title inscriptions) -- Matheus Heiss (title inscription dated 1808).
First edition of the Roman Catholic version by J. Dietenberger, published the same year as Luther's complete translation, of which he made use. The woodcuts are close copies of those used in the 1534 Frankfurt Bible, which also influenced the illustration of the Coverdale Bible of 1535. Darlow & Moule 4200.
