Amsterdam: 1682.
Together 15 parts (and two indices) in 7 volumes, 8° (155 x 102mm). Engraved general title, 24 engraved plates (three folding), and one engraved illustration in the text. (A few leaves with faint dampstaining, eight leaves in parts 13 and 14, including one folding-plate, with small wormhole, one leaf in part 10 with old marginal restoration, just touching a few letters.) Contemporary blind-stamped pigskin (the sixth volume not quite uniform, but apparently having always been part of this set), leather labels, blue edges. Provenance: F. V. Palm (early ownership inscription on titles and front free endpapers of all volumes).
AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE COMPLETE COPY OF THE FIRST COLLECTED EDITION OF THE WORKS OF BÖHME. Published by Johann Georg Gichtel at Amsterdam on the basis of Böhme's original manuscripts, it includes his Lebens-lauff, Aurora or Morgenröthe im Aufgang, Von dem dreyfachen Leben des Menschen, Viertzig Fragen von der Seelen Verstand, Essentz, Wesen, Natur und Eigenschafft, Von der Menschwerdung, Von sechs Puncten hohe und tieffe Gründung, Der Weg zu Christo, Bedencken, De signatura rerum, Clavis oder Schlüsel etlicher vornehmen Puncten, Von der Gnaden-Wahl, Von Christi Testamenten, Mysterium Magnum, Betrachtung Göttlicher Offenbarung, and Theosophische Sendbriefe, as well as numerous minor texts.
'In all his works Boehme spoke as a prophet ... Convinced that he wrote under direct inspiration, he claimed that he changed nothing once it was written. The obscurity of his style is the expression of his mode of insight -- full of bold metaphors, alchemical terms, number symbolism, and Neoplatonic conceptions -- and reveals his background in Luther, Paracelsus, Kaspar Schwenckfeld, and Valentin Weigel ... By placing cosmogony at the center of his theology, Boehme reveals his debt to the Lutheran tradition, and especially to Paracelsus and the Protestant mystics of the sixteenth century. But he is more explicit and detailed than his predecessors. One far-reaching effect of this theology was profound reference for nature and closeness to it. Nature is given positive reality; its study gains justification; its observation -- if rightly used as an avenue to the invisible realm beyond it -- is an act of devotion' (DSB II pp. 222-3).
The work was printed with great accuracy, a small type-face being used since it was the initial hope to include all the works in one volume. Each part has its own title, and could be purchased individually at the time of publication. COMPLETE UNIFORMLY BOUND SETS SUCH AS THIS ARE OF GREAT RARITY. Buddecke. Die Jakob Böhme Ausgaben, Werke 1; Caillet 1288; Faber du Faur 116; 500 Years of Gnosis in Europe 40b; BL STC German B-1646. (7)
