2° (256 x 186mm). Bâtarde type, double column and headline with foliation. Full-page woodcut on title depicting two scenes (St. Louis and Pope in the upper half and the French and Turkish armies in the lower), 6 sets of woodcut exotic alphabets, including Hebrew and Greek, 6 column-width cuts of battle scenes, printer's device at end, woodcut initials from several sets, including criblé and historiated. (First leaf stained, repaired hole with some loss in second leaf, neat internal tear in first 2 leaves, occasional small stain, lightly browned.) 18th-century English calf with the Spencer crest and coronet in gilt on sides, red leather spine label, sprinkled edges (a little scuffed). Provenance: Toubel (16th-century name at end) -- [?John Ker, 3rd Duke of Roxburghe (1740-1804; pencilled ascription, not in his sale catalogue)] -- George John, 2nd Earl Spencer (1758-1834; binding) -- George Horace (1882-1960) and Alison Johnstone (d.1977), Trewithen, Cornwall (1933 bookplate), then by descent.

THE SPENCER COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of a compendium of French crusades against the infidel, beginning with those under Charlemagne. Mamerot incorporates accounts of pilgrimages to the Holy Land from other works and describes cities and regions visited on the way, such as Venice, Candia, Cyprus, and Jerusalem, customs of local people, their alphabets (copying the woodcut alphabets from Breydenbach) and much information about Islam and the Prophet Mohammed. Two of the woodcut battle scenes had previously appeared in Le Noir's Mer des hystoires the previous year. Mortimer, Harvard French, 363; Brunet IV, 645.
