2 parts, 8° (172 x 102mm). Engraved frontispiece. Contemporary crimson morocco gilt, bound for Jonas Hanway, covers with a border composed of roses and foliage, a winged hourglass in corners, in the centre a woman's head surrounded by the motto 'O Save Me Save Me', and a rhomb of two rows of stars, spine with green morocco lettering-piece and repeated floral tool, yellow edges, cloth case. Provenance: Jonas Hanway (binding) -- Standert, 4 Great James Street (18th-century inscription on fly-leaf) -- John Sparrow (booklabel; his sale, Christie's London, 21 October 1992, lot 164).

A DISTINCTIVE BINDING BY HANWAY'S SECOND BINDER. An indefatigable philanthropist, Hanway helped found the Magdalen Charity for Fallen Women, incorporated in 1769 when it moved into a new building in St George's Fields. A census of 23 such Hanway bindings is given in G.D. Hobson, English Bindings in the Library of J.R. Abbey (1940); this binding is unrecorded.
