BURNSIDE, Ambrose (1824-1881), Union General, defeated at Fredericksburg. Carte-de-visite photograph signed ("A.E. Burnside Majr General"), by Case & Getchell of Boston (imprint on lower mount and on verso), n.d. [1863?].
3 7/8 x 2¼ in., including gilt-ruled mount. In very fine condition. Signed in ink in lower part of image, with date inscribed on mount.
A well-known half-length image of the unfortunate Burnside, whose heavy side whiskers with a shaved chin gave rise to the term "Side-burns." Here Burnside--credited with letting Lee escape at Antietam and with ordering the sanguinary frontal assault on Fredericksburg--poses in full uniform, the stars on his shoulder straps just visible. In his memoirs, Grant noted sympathetically that Burnside was "generally liked and respected. He was not, however, fitted to command an Army. No one knew this better than himself."
