THE HEIR TO THE AUSTRIAN THRONE, WHOSE ASSASSINATION IGNITED WORLD WAR I. A striking full-face image of the young archduke, sporting an elaborate moustache, in his high-collared military uniform with several decorations on his chest. Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated on a visit to Sarajevo, Bosnia on 29 June 1914, with catastrophic diplomatic, and ultimately, military consequences.

Signed photographs of the Archduke are uncommon: American Book Prices Current records only two examples since 1970, one from the Cornelius Greenaway and Marans Collections, 17 April 1996, lot 136).
