THE AUTHOR OF "THE BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC." A finely detailed head-and shoulders image of the influential author, suffragette and abolitionist, wearing an elaborately embroidered gown and shawl. Howe's memorable lyrics to the tune "John Brown's Body," penned in 1861 after a tour of Union Army encampments, achieved universal popularity as the most widely sung anthem of the Civil War, under the title of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."
