LEE AND HIS LIEUTENANTS: THE 1869 WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS REUNION OF LEE AND FORMER CONFEDERATE GENERALS

A rare image, especially when signed by so many of those depicted in this fine group photograph. Lee, in suit and tie, is seated very erect in the first row, second from the left. In August 1869, four years after the bloody conflict in which he had played such a decisive role, Lee consented to sit for this photograph after traveling to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in hope the medicinal waters might ease the pain of his persistent rheumatism. Some old comrades from the former Confederate army were also present: In the present plate he poses with Brigadier General James Connor, Brigadier General Martin W. Gary, Major General John Bankhead Magruder, Brigadier General Robert D. Lilley, General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, Brigadier General A.R. Lawton, Brigadier General Henry A Wise, and Brigadier General Joseph L. Brent. Adding an exotic touch, the Turkish envoy Blacque Bey is seated at Lee's right, while philanthropists George Peabody and W.W. Corcoran pose at his left, with Richmond attorney James Lyons.

As Meredith pithily comments, in general, Lee "sought to avoid the company of the older men, for they seemed obsessed by two subjects: the war and politics" (Meredith, The Face of Robert E. Lee, pp. 84-85).

Provenance: Colonel Robert E. Withers, C.S.A., -- unknown (sale, Sotheby's 26 June 1998, lot 23, 5,000).
