THE THREE GRAND DAMES OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY stand together, a beaming Mrs. Roosevelt at the center, holding the hand of Mrs. Truman on her right, and Mrs. Wilson on her left. Each woman has a corsage pinned to her coat. Most likely this image dates from the late 1950s (Mrs. Wilson died in 1961). Given FDR's great impact on the Democratic Party, and indeed the world, Mrs. Roosevelt held a special place in American political life after 1945. She embodied the spirit of New Deal liberalism and championed many progressive causes. Yet in some ways Edith Bolling Wilson was the more significant First Lady, since she became the de facto acting President after Wilson's paralyzing stroke and his long, halting recovery.
