Sal Meijer had a unique personal style and is nowadays seen as one of the great 'Naives'. His work is often compared to that of Henri Rousseau. During his life he painted a variety of subjects. Mostly known are his views of Amsterdam. Later when he moved to Blaricum he started to paint landscapes. But Meijer also painted nudes, portraits and still lifes. The only subject that has been a constant during Sal Meijer's painting life is that of the cat. He paints portraits of cats as individuals; they are frontally depicted and look the viewer directly in the eye. Meijer's cats are seen in the comfort of their own home and in close up.
