De Vries became a member in 1924 and in 1983 he became member of honour. In his early years Jannes de Vries was not so productive. He earned his living as a teacher at the Praedinius Gymnasium in Groningen. Important subjects in his work are empty and lonely landscapes, mostly of North Groningen; with wide fields, wide and high horizons, and strong and intense colours. He developed his own expressionist style with a firm brushstroke. After 1966 when he retired, he started to paint very passionately. De Vries chose his colours because of their emotional impact. Because of these immense strong colors, the landscape becomes almost mystical. De Vries travelled a lot during his life. In the early 1920's he visited North Africa for the first time. This area fascinated him immensely, and after 1945 he travelled very regularly to the Mediterranée. Here he observed the people in the Islamic world. Later he also started to paint religious subjects; stories from the Old Testament, like Ruth and Boaz (see lot 75). The personal tragedies in these tales, taking place in the countryside he knew so well from his journeys, show his human interest and are witnesses of another, more psychological aspect of Jannes de Vries.
