Lot Essay

The Liverpool-born painter William Huggins specialised in animal subjects. From the tigers and lions he studied at the city's menagerie, to rustic subjects such as the present lot, his work is remarkable for its naturalism and for the sensitive way in which the transparent colour glazes are manipulated over a white ground.
