Lot Essay

Forge Valley was a popular retreat near Scarborough.

In 1877, the year this picture was painted, Grimshaw's twins, Lancelot and Elaine, named after Tennyson's Idylls of the King were born in the town. The previous year Grimshaw had built a house on the cliffs called 'Castle by the Sea', possibly named after Longfellow's eponymous poem.
