NOTE:

In 1934, Huang Menggui was a government official in Fujian Province. Because Some friends of his took part in a rebellion, Huang was forced to move to Nanjing under supervision by the Chinese Government. Xu Beihong often went to visit him. After Huang's release, Xu Beihong created this image of Horses Drinking and inscribed the dedication to Huang Menggui. In the painting, two horses are drinking water in a relaxed mood, but the other one remains on its guard. This is meant as a metaphor to indicate that even in a safe environments, one should always keep oneself alert.
