NOTE BY WANG JIEKE:
"Master Xu Beihong returned to Singapore in August 1941, when China suffered the Japanese invasion. He expressed his sorrow and expectations for his country in this painting. This ink cock was painted in an unusual way, as Xu Beihong did not emphasize the arrogant shape of the cock but instead paid more attention to painting the spirit in its eyes. Xu Beihong did not sign ot seal this painting. When he presented it to Huang Manshi, the collector did not ass his seals either for many years. Later, Huang Manshi gave the painting to my cousin and told him never to inscribe or seal it. When my cousin gave it to me in 1975, he gave me the same instructions. This painting was a pure art creation of Xu Beihong, I just left it unsigned ans un-sealed to maintain its perfection!"
