A SET OF FOUR GEORGE III SILVER PIE-DISHES
MARK OF JOHN PARKER AND EDWARD WAKELIN, LONDON, 1772
Shaped oval and with a gadrooned rim, engraved with a coat-of-arms below a duke's coronet, each marked on the back, further engraved with a number and a scratchweight 'No. 23 23=15'; 'No. 24 23=10'; 'No. 25 23=3' and 'No. 26 23=17'

The arms are those of Clinton for Henry Pelham Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyme (1720-1794). He succeeded to the Earldom of Lincoln on the death of his elder brother in 1730. He was Lord of the Bedchamber to both George II and George III, Master of the Jewel Office in 1742, Cofferer of the Household 1746-1754, and Auditor of the Exchequer from 1751 until his death. He married Catherine, daughter and co-heir of Henry Pelham, First Lord of the Treasury and Catherine, daughter of John, 2nd Duke of Rutland in 1744 .
On 4 January 1773 the Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyme placed an extensive order for table place with Parker and Wakelin, including "8 Doz. Plates" costing £ 604 15s 11d. The whole order, which was followed by another the following month, totaled £1,950 10s 1d and was paid for in part by old plate.
