A CHARLES II SILVER SPICE BOX AND COVER
MARK OF ARTHUR MANWARING, LONDON, CIRCA 1660
Compressed circular, the cover engraved with coat-of-arms and the base engraved with a crest, each within plume mantling, with makers mark only inside base and cover
3½ in. (9 cm.) diam.
4 oz. (142 gr.)
The arms are those of Paget impaling those of Rich for William, 5th Baron Paget (1609-1678) who married Lady Francis Rich (d.1672), daughter of Sir Henry Rich, 1st Earl of Holland, in 1632. The crest on the base would appear to have been engraved at a different date. It is interesting to note that one of the families which bore this crest was the Griffith family of Plas Newydd, Anglesey and Penrhyn, co. Caernarfon. The Griffith heiress married Sir Nicholas Bagnall an ancestor of Sir Henry Bayley 3rd Bt. (1744-1812) who succeeded to the Earldom of Paget in 1769.
