This service was originally commissioned around 1830 for Nicholas I's summer residence 'Alexandria' in Peterhof. The private estate was then given by the Emperor to his wife Alexandra Feodorovna. The shield motif, reflecting the Gothic taste of the time, was designed by V. Zhukovskii, and was inspired by the Potsdam tournament of 1829, in honour of the German-born Empress, where the winners were crowned with white roses.
