Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich (1831-1891) was a third son of Tsar Nicholas I and Alexandra Feodorovna. A soldier for most of his life, he served in the Crimean War, but the pinnacle of his career was during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878), when he commanded the Russian army of the Danube as Field Marshall.
