Le modèle antique du piétement apparaît sur le portrait du Comte Gustave-Maurice Armfelt peint à Florence en 1793 par Louis Gauffier. Les lions ailés flanquent là aussi une palmette stylisée (voir, Léon de Groër, Les Arts Décoratifs de 1790 - 1850, Office du Livre, Paris, 1985, p.20, n.18).
