THE OLD TESTAMENT TRINITY
BYZANTINE (CONSTANTINOPLE), 14TH CENTURY
The composition structured symmetrically, the three angels holding sceptres and making the sign of the Trinitarian God, seated on backless thrones with footstools around a semi-circular table, the latter set with a transparent cloth and cutlery, Abraham and Sarah entering from opposite directions to serve their guests, the building behind having a niche, blind windows and two passages with tied curtains, above a vaulted structure, the faces modelled delicately with brown and lighter areas of pink, the elegant features more clearly defined with fine white brushstrokes, the angels with braided hair and diadems, their chitons with clavi, their himatia rendered in sombre green, crimson and terracotta tones, the brown wings accentuated with gold striations and blue feathers underneath, the cupola and curtains with gold decoration

The icon was purchased by the present owner from Eski Istanbul in 1951.
