Lot Essay

Mikhail Ivanovich Dikarev was one of the most famous Russian iconographers of the late 19th and early 20th century. He was also a restorer and collector of icons. Trained in Mstera, together with Joseph Semenovich Chirikov and Vasily Pavlovich Guryanov, he worked for the emperor Nicholas II and the Imperial family. Chirikov and Dikarev executed a series of icons for the Marble Palace in St. Petersburg, comparable to this lot. Such an example is the panel of St. Fyodor from the collection of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg (inv.no. ERZh-2517, illustrated above).
