MELCHITE, 18TH CENTURY
The elderly Church Father represented seated, his pensive face framed by his hair and long beard, rendered in detail, with a mitre and a halo, wearing episcopal vestments embellished with flowers, the gilded throne carved with opulent foliate scrolls, against a domed interior, the main panel supplemented by ten roundels, each depicting an episode from the life of the saint St. Basil icon: 27 5/8 x 20½ in. Purchased by the present owner from the Khalil John Sarkis Museum in Beirut, on 18 October 1963.
