GREEK, CIRCA 1600 The Forerunner with large wings, standing on a rocky plateau, gazing upwards and gesturing in speech, holding an inscribed scroll, wearing both the raiment of skins and the chiton, his decollated head in a bowl in the foreground, behind him the tree with an ax as a reference to his sermon on repentance, rendered with deep colours and occassionally white highlights, against grey, barren peaks and a gold background, with traces of a black inscription 12 3/8 x 10¼ in. (31.5 x 26 cm)
