BOYLE, Robert (1627-91). An Essay about the Origin & Virtue of Gems. London: W. Godbid for Moses Pitt, 1672. 8°. (A little spotting). Late 17th/early 18th-century calf, gilt spine, double gilt fillet round sides with acorn cornerpieces (rather rubbed, spine lacks lettering piece), in a cloth chemize and folding cloth box.
FIRST EDITION of Boyle's work on gems, called by Fulton 'the beginning of the modern development in knowledge of crystal structure', although, in reality, the work 'really has very little to do with gemstones except as they happened conveniently to provide crystals for Boyle's inquiries into the solid state of matter', Sinkankas, Gemmology, (1993), 863; Wing B3964; Fulton 96; Krivatsy 1692.
