BURCHARD, Provost of Ursperg (d.1230). Chronicum ... a Nino rege Assyriorum Magno, vsque ad Fridericum II, Romanorum imperatorem. [Strassburg: Crato Mylius], March 1537. 2° (310 x 194mm). Woodcut device on title, a larger version on last page, 110 fine white-on-black woodcut medallion portraits of the emperors (small hole in K1 with loss of a few letters, occasional staining and spotting, scattered worming in inner blank margins, repairs at head of last few leaves with no damage to text). Early 18th-century Dutch panelled calf, gilt spine, thin gilt border round sides, marbled edges (a little rubbed, a few leaves sprung). Provenance: Christophorus Wittfeldius (near-contemporary ownership inscription in red ink, with an 8-line prayer, on title, and a few marginalia in his hand, some smudged, on the second and third pages of text).
Second edition of the Ursperg Chronicle, but the first to be edited by the German humanist and reformer Caspar Hedio, correspondent of Luther and Zwingli and friend of Bucer. His additions occupy the last 162 pages and bring the chronicle up to the date of publication (i.e. 1537). Adams C2518; VD 16 B9801.
