Lot Essay

A student of the Académie Royale des Beaux Arts, Brussels, between 1882 and 1887, Laermans went on to exhibit both at the official Salons and with La Libre Esthétique, the successor of Les XX in Brussels. He participated in the Vienna Secessions of 1898 and 1899.
The muted palette, stark landscape and processional composition of the work sold here is typical of much of his oeuvre, which frequently engages with the plight of the poor and labouring classes.
