Lot Essay

Pelagio Palagi (1775-1860), was commissionned in 1832 by Carlo Alberto, King of Sardinia, (1798-1849) to refurbish some of the state-rooms at Castello Reale di Racconigi. One of the most accomplished examples of his work is the Etruscan room which was completed in 1834. It not only included a scheme for the walls, but also floor, ceiling, doors and fireplaces. The furniture for this piece was executed by Gabriello Capello, also known as 'Il Moncalvo', who specialised in detailed marquetry and inlay work.
