Lot Essay

Umberto Zanotti Bianco, was an eminent Italian archeologist, anti-fascist and politician. He forged a close friendship with Maria- José, Queen of Italy, (1906-2001) after his arrest in 1941 for his vocal stance against the fascist regime. Bianco became president of the Croce Rossa Italiana (1944-1949), founded the Italia Nostra and was created a life-senator by president Luigi Einaudi in 1952.
