Lot Essay

Compare with a similar dish although with a cyclical Wanli eight-character mark offered in our London Rooms, 19 June 2001, lot 161.
See also a Wanli box with a similar decoration on the cover, from the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in Lacquer Wares of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong 2006, pl.170. The central medallion carved through layers of red, green and ochre lacquer is also divided in three parts: the ground, the middle part with rock, flowers and bird and the sky with clouds.
