AN INLAID BRONZE GARMENT HOOK
CHINA, SONG DYNASTY, 12TH/13TH CENTURY

Lot Essay

The earliest datable example of a garment hook of this form with a figure grasping a fish was excavated from a tomb near Nanjing dating to the late 3rd century Wu Kingdom (220-80) or to the Western Jin Kingdom (265-317), see Wenwu, 1976:3, p.57, fig.3.
Compare a similar garment hook from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Desmond Gure, illustrated in Mostra d'Arte Cinese/Exhibition of Chinese Art, Venice, 1954, p. 47, no. 120 ; see also the one illustrated in B. Karlgren and J. Wirgin, Chinese Bronzes - The Natanael Wessen Collection, The Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, vol.1, Stockholm 1969, pp.160-161, pl.50l).
See also the almost identical garment hook from the Falk collection, sold in our New York Rooms, 20 September 2001, lot 179.
