CHINA, QING DYNASTY, KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722)

Lot Essay

The decoration of the current kesi panel is very rare. As a matter of fact, it is quite unusual that the central motif be such graceful slender mountains woven in subtle tones of green, blue, grey and ochre. For a similar composition with mountains and trees, see a large kesi panel from the Qianlong reign, illustrated in Huang Neng-Fu, Complete Work of Chinese Arts - Craft Arts Section, vol.7, 'Printed, Dyed, Woven and Embroidered Fabric, Part 2, Beijing 1987, p.174, pl.173.
See also another 18th century kesi depicting rocks and stormy river with a golden sky and red sun on the background (very close to the present lot), illustrated in Huang Neng-Fu, Op. Cit., p.191, pl.186.
